In 2004 the U.S. Secret Service Information Resources Management Division (IRMD) consolidated Secret Service information currently maintained in systems such as mainframe, SSWEB, hardcopy binders, folders, forms and pamphlets, into an on-demand, highly-efficient web-based portal. The Intranet Portal aimed to provide a single source and directory of relevant and accessible services to all authorized individuals who need Secret Service information and applications to perform their jobs.
BIDS, one of the initial portlet projects for the new intranet portal, was converted from an existing mainframe application. The BIDS portlet application allowed eligible employees to apply for promotions and HR Specialists and approval committees to review applications and approve promotions.
Accomplishments
Improved efficiency of existing business processes by allowing approval committee members to review applicant information online and vote online in realtime during the approval committee meetings, thereby eliminating 100+ hours manual labor printing and preparing large hardcopy binders of applications.
